Monthly Commentary
For those celebrating the end of Ramadan, Eid Mubarak! This month of the fast has seen big money going into a VC fund, fuel solutions as well as a few start-ups raising money. We even have an acquired startup (four years ago) announcing their owners are investing more cash for them to grow (faster) - in recent newsletters we have talked about capital efficiency, let’s see what Kongsberg Digital can do when sending money to Denmark. Coach Solutions has seen healthy top-line growth since the acquisition (doubling from 2020 to 2022), but has seen their net result drop from a solid almost 50% net profit margin to diving head first into a negative result, through more than 3x’ing their personnel costs (according to their official books in Denmark).
Of other companies in requirement of big money, this newsletter also sees the stark difference of raising money (for AI) in Silicon Valley compared to Singapore (also for AI). A US $13m seed round compared to a US $2.7m Pre-A round. A proof of concept vs a proven solution across 70+ projects in 4 countries. What are the Americans better at? The tech? The pitch? The access to capital? The (high) cost of developers? All of the above? See deals in the tidbits at the end.
While delegates at the IMO MEPC81 have been discussing whether or not we should have a global emissions tax, the race for net-zero fuels and energy-efficiency has not paused! From full-scale CCUS being installed to the worlds first ammonia bunkering operation here in Singapore (I guess that’s what happens when a self-made mining billionaire wants to try out ammonia on a PSV - speed).
Now, I’m going grab my popcorn and wait for Nine Realms to start pushing out their millions into exciting new supply chain ventures.
Happy reading!

Limited opportunities, limitless solutions and reward-hungry investors: Why maritime disruptors are facing a wave of consolidation - Meanwhile, back in maritime, a round-up of maritime SaaS deals over the last few years, with insight from a few players. TL;DR: Too many players and too few shipping companies to sell to - equals inevitable consolidation.

Cargill sees big ‘real world’ wind power savings, business case tenuous - TL;DR: With current fossil fuel prices, the economics are tricky. After first six months of operation, has saved on average 3 tonnes of fuel per day - or 14%. In near-optimum conditions during an open sea voyage, the vessel achieved 11 tonnes of fuel savings per day - or 52%. This vessel only have two sails, while most kamsarmax vessels will carry three - increasing the fuel savings by a factor of 1.5. Payback is around 10 years.

The IMO MEPC81 happened:
Three rival camps pitch up at key IMO decarbonisation meeting
IMO inches closer to agreeing world’s first emissions levy as momentum shifts
Norway’s bad IMO diet plan for shipping: a solution that causes more harm than good - Highlights the upstream problems of grey ammonia, biodiesel and fossil LNG, and the problem of the suggestion “Norway et al” has for the MEPC81. TL;DR - walking backwards into the future.
And the whole statement from IMO: Marine Environment Protection Committee 81st session - TL;DR: Potential global IMO emissions tax.
Cape diversions see box shipping EU ETS outlays leap by 191% - With ships now sailing around Africa instead of Suez, Oceanscore has estimated that the route diversion has tripled bunker consumption and increased sailing speeds by 25% (based on AIS data). TL;DR: Not really a big port in the global scheme of things, and the fifth largest on the US west coast - and as quoted in the article: “[It is] one more disruption in an already-stressed system for the global supply chain”. Informative for someone (like me) who are not too familiar with port(s) on the US west coast.

Alexander Saverys’ ammonia mission doesn’t mean running on green fuels all of the time - An interesting interview with the CMB.tech / Euronav executive, on why they are bullish on ammonia. TL;DR - they solve the fuel supply constraints by running on ammonia just enough to cover the prevailing regulatory requirements, mainly the “real gamechanger” of regulations which is the FuelEU Maritime.
Sustainable fuels could cost the same as fossil fuels by 2035, says Wärtsilä report - Meanwhile, Wartsila publishes report on the projected costs of fossil vs alternative fuels, if you add in the EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime charges.
Sailing on nuts: Testing cashew nut oil biofuels in shipping - Alternatively, you could be doing shells of cashews. Wartsila, LR’s fuel business and biofuel supplier ACT Group in collaboration, making a 30% biofuel blend, to be used on UECC car carrier ships.
Ammonia engines face pilot testing as pressure mounts for first deliveries - Whether you believe in ammonia as a fuel or not, it is coming.
